CLEARFIELD – On March 29, 2011, Clearfield County District Attorney, William A. Shaw, Jr., spoke to Morris Township residents about the Neighborhood Watch Program.

In a meeting held at the Morris Township Municipal Building, Shaw talked to the residents about the implementation of a Neighborhood Watch Program in Morris Township. Shaw stated that the ultimate goal for the Neighborhood Watch Program was for community members to reach a  common understanding of being willing to lookout for each other and a willingness to report criminal behavior.

Shaw explained that the biggest concern citizens have when reporting a crime is fear of retaliation, and that this fear can ultimately prevent citizens with knowledge about a crime to come forward. Shaw stated that by implementing a Neighborhood Watch Program a community can take a decisive step towards eliminating this type of fear and concern.

Shaw explained the options available to citizens with information about a crime to provide anonymous tips to Crimestoppers.  Shaw first explained that citizens can visit the Clearfield County District Attorney's Website at "www.ClearfieldDA.org" to send an anonymous e-mail reporting criminal activity. When crime tips are made over the internet, the reporting source is asked to fill out a form providing information on the suspect and the nature of the crime. The form is then sent electronically to the District Attorney’s Office and forwarded to the appropriate police agency for investigation. Shaw informed those present that the electronic form is completely anonymous and no action is taken to learn the identity of the reporting source.

Shaw also explained that citizens have a second option of calling an anonymous tip line to report criminal activity. The 800 number is manned 24 hours a day at the Clearfield County 911 center. The phone does not have caller ID and there is no action taken to determine the identity of the caller. The number to call is  (800)-376-4700.

Shaw detailed the success of the Neighborhood Watch Program, pointing out that dozens of cases have been solved in Clearfield County as a direct result of citizens providing anonymous tips.  Shaw stated that community involvement is critical to keeping our streets and neighborhoods safe and would like to see more Neighborhood Watch groups developed in Clearfield County. Neighborhood Watch groups serve a vital role to law enforcement. People living in the community serve as the eyes and ears of law enforcement and can provide valuable information about crime. Anyone interested in forming a Neighborhood Watch group is encouraged to contact the District Attorney’s Office at (814) 765-2641 or visit the District Attorney’s Website.

Shaw congratulated the Morris Township Officials for organizing the event.  Shaw stated that he was pleased to see the Morris Township Supervisors taking an active role in supporting the effort to start a Neighborhood Watch program.
