Professor Katherene Connor, DA Shaw, Kevin McGarry CLEARFIELD - On March 24, 2011, Clearfield County District Attorney, William A. Shaw, Jr., spoke to students at the Penn State Law School.
Shaw was a guest lecturer for Professor Katherene Conner's Externship Placement Course. Shaw spoke to the students about the role of a prosecutor in the Pennsylvania Criminal Justice system. Shaw explained how a prosecutor is not merely an advocate for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, but must also be a minister of justice and must ensure that an accused is afforded all of their constitutional rights. Shaw outlined the duties of a prosecutor from the filing of criminal charges to the completion of a jury trial. Shaw also answered various questions from the students about practicing criminal law in Pennsylvania.
Shaw has been working closely with Penn State University's Dickinson School of Law for the past several years, speaking to students about various legal issues as well as annually hiring a legal intern from Penn State's University Park location. Shaw stated that giving a law student the opportunity to complete an internship with the Clearfield County District Attorney's Office provides the student with an invaluable experience in a hands-on environment while also allowing the student to earn credits towards their law degree.
Shaw explained that while serving as an intern with the District Attorney's Office, students are given the opportunity to prosecute preliminary hearings and trials, observe various court proceedings, and work closely with practicing attorneys. Shaw believes that after completing an internship with the Clearfield County District Attorney's Office, students are more prepared to begin their legal career.
Shaw stated that the District Attorney's Office's current legal intern, Kevin McGarry, is a third-year law student from North Wildwood, New Jersey, who will graduate from Penn State University's Dickinson School of Law in May 2011.
