Michael Rodriguez CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County District Attorney, William A. Shaw, Jr. announced today that an inmate who escaped from the Clearfield County Jail has been taken into custody.
Shaw identified the inmate as 32 year old Michael Rodriguez, of Allegheny Street, Buffalo, NY.
Rodriguez was being held in the Clearfield County Jail awaiting trial on charges of Burglary, Criminal Trespass, Terroristic Threats, Simple Assault, and related charges. The charges relate to August 10, 2009, incident where Rodriguez was charged by the DuBois City Police. The affidavit of probable cause filed by Officer Randal Young, alleges that Rodriguez stole a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix from a service station in Buffalo. Rodriguez then traveled to DuBois City and broke into a residence of a female acquaintance. The victim reported to police that she was awakened by Rodriguez who was choking her.
On August 14, 2009, Rodriguez waived his right to a preliminary hearing on the charges filed by DuBois City Police. Bail was set at $150,000.00 and Rodriguez remained incarcerated pending trial.
At approximately 2:05 pm on September 22, 2009, Rodriguez escaped from the Clearfield County Jail after successfully destroying a portion of perimeter fencing and scaling an outside fence. Police officers arrived on-scene within minutes of the escape and a man-hunt began immediately.
At approximately 9:34 am on September 23, 2009, a pickup truck was reported stolen from the Co-Go’s service station near the Wolfe Run Industrial Park. At 9:57 am Clearfield County Deputy Sherrifs Jerry Nevling and Mark Coudriet observed Rodriguez in the stolen pickup near LeContes Mills, Girard Township. A high-speed pursuit followed where the Pennsylvania State Police and the Sherrif’s Office established a road block and deployed spike strips in an effort to stop Rodriguez. At approximately 10:04 am, Rodriguez lost control of the pickup truck and crashed along a curve on Route 879 near the Progress Camp Road in Goshen. Rodriguez was immediately taken into custody without further incident. Rodriguez was then transported via ambulance to Clearfield Hospital for injuries sustained in the one vehicle crash.
Shaw reported that additional charges will be filed against Rodriguez pending completion of the police investigation. Shaw stated that an investigation is on-going to determine the circumstances of the escape and to identify individuals who may have aided Rodriguez with the get-away.
