DISTRICT ATTORNEY SHAW WARNS OF INTERNET SCAMS PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 17 February 2009

CLEARFIELD – Clearfield County District Attorney, William A. Shaw, Jr. announces today that a growing number of complaints are being received as the result of internet scams. Shaw encourages all internet users to exercise caution while online.

Shaw reports that the District Attorney’s Office is receiving an alarming number of complaints from individuals who have been victimized while using the internet. Shaw stated that there are many scams going on over the internet and believes that a higher level of awareness is needed to avoid being victimized. Shaw stated that the most common form of victimization that he sees involves unsolicited e-mail messages. Shaw reported that "many people receive e-mail messages reporting that they have won some type of prize. However, to claim the prize, individuals must first send a check or money order". The advanced fee is required before you are able to claim your prize.

Shaw stated that it is unfortunate that many individuals fall prey to fraudulent schemes over the internet. On-line users are encouraged to use common sense when faced with internet scams. The old saying that "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is" should be relied on.

Individuals who are uncertain if they are being scammed are encouraged to contact their local law enforcement agency or the District Attorney’s Office. Before sending any money or personal information over the internet in response to unsolicited e-mails, Shaw encourages a quick phone call to law enforcement. Shaw noted that "it is much easier to determine if an internet opportunity is valid or fraudulent than it is to recover money lost over the internet." Shaw reported that most internet scams originate oversees. Unfortunately, it is very difficult if not impossible to investigate, identify or prosecute internet scam artists located oversees.

Shaw invites internet users to visit the following educational resources: www.IC3.gov, www.lookstoogoodtobetrue.com and www.ftc.gov. These sites are extremely informative and give practical advice to assist internet users with their day to day activities.
